Make the most of longer sunshine hours and save on your energy bills

As we head into Summer our solarZero customers are able to make the most of these longer sunshine hours.

Here are our tips and tricks for making the most of all that sunshine.

If you aren’t using an appliance unplug it

With longer sunshine hours comes longer hours spent outdoors. It's a great time to check the appliances that are plugged in that are using energy without even realising it. Although it's not much per device or appliance, together it all adds up.

Opt for LED bulbs

During summer time a lot of us tend to get to those jobs that have been waiting all winter. If you are replacing lights ahead of the family get together for Christmas make sure to replace these with LED bulbs. LED bulbs use up to 75% less energy and last 25 times longer than standard bulbs. They might cost a little more but pay for themselves in the long run.

Seal and insulate your home

Drafts are noticeable in rooms in winter, and are still important in Summer. The more drafts the more heat that is coming into your home during the warmer months. This means that your home's cooling system has to work even harder to keep the temperature down. Where possible seal windows and doors - you’ll notice the benefits all year round.

Close the curtains during the day

If you are like us the moment we walk into our house at the end of the day is like walking into a heat wall. If you keep the curtains closed during the day while you are out then less heat is likely to get into your house meaning you are less likely to be reaching for that air conditioning remote.

Check your air conditioning filter

There’s no magic temperature to set your air conditioning to keep energy costs down. But make sure to check your air conditioning filter. A clogged filter can contribute to a higher energy bill as the fan can’t work as efficiently to cool to the temperature that you have selected.

Check the fridge temperature

With friends and family around for summer bbqs your fridge is likely getting more action than it does in summer. Make sure to check the temperature and the seal. The more often you open the fridge the more energy it is using to keep below the ambient temperature. If you do need a new fridge make sure to check out our range on mysolarZero for the curated range of energy efficiency products.
